Early Pregnancy Assessment and First Trimester Care

Patients can access private pregnancy scans in Cardiff, including early pregnancy scans, reassurance scans and dating scans. These scans are used to confirm viability, establish accurate gestational age, identify multiple pregnancies and assess early fetal development. Where clinically indicated, transvaginal ultrasound may be performed to improve diagnostic accuracy in early pregnancy.

Our first trimester care and early pregnancy scans support patients from the earliest stages of pregnancy, particularly in the presence of symptoms such as bleeding, pain or previous pregnancy loss. Early ultrasound assessment can provide reassurance, identify potential complications and guide appropriate follow-up.

Advanced Prenatal Genetic Screening

We provide advanced prenatal screening including NIPT test UK, which can be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy. NIPT analyses cell-free placental DNA circulating in the maternal bloodstream to assess the chance of chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13), with detection rates exceeding 99% for Down syndrome.

Depending on the test selected, additional screening may include sex chromosome conditions (such as Turner syndrome), selected microdeletions (including 22q11.2 deletion / DiGeorge syndrome) and, in some cases, single gene disorders. Different NIPT platforms vary in scope and validation, and selecting the most appropriate test depends on individual clinical circumstances, ultrasound findings and patient preference.

Screening results are always interpreted within the clinical context. NIPT is a screening test rather than a diagnostic test, and high-chance results require confirmation with invasive diagnostic testing such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, which carry a miscarriage risk of approximately 1 in 200.

Carrier Screening and Inherited Genetic Risk

For a more comprehensive assessment of genetic risk, carrier screening can be undertaken before or during pregnancy. This identifies whether one or both parents carry genes for recessive conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and haemoglobinopathies.

When combined with ultrasound and NIPT, carrier screening provides a broader understanding of potential genetic risks, particularly for conditions not detectable by chromosomal screening alone.

Our approach integrates ultrasound findings, genetic screening results and individual maternal factors to provide a comprehensive assessment of pregnancy. This allows early identification of potential concerns while minimising unnecessary interventions. Screening results are explained clearly, and patients are supported in understanding the implications and available options.

While many pregnancies are straightforward, access to specialist assessment and early reassurance can be particularly valuable in cases of prior miscarriage, maternal anxiety, complex medical history or abnormal screening results.
