Our centre is led by Dr Bryan Beattie, Consultant in Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine. Dr Beattie is the NHS lead for fetal medicine in Wales and runs the specialist unit at the University Hospital of Wales. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG).

Your Pregnancy and Newborn Care Pathway

We provide comprehensive, consultant-led pregnancy care at every stage, from pre-pregnancy planning through to birth and newborn care. Our services are designed to support you with reassurance, screening, diagnosis and expert clinical guidance throughout your pregnancy journey.

Before Pregnancy

If you are planning a pregnancy, early preparation can be very helpful. Our pre-pregnancy care services include health optimisation, review of medical history and carrier screening to assess inherited genetic risk before conception or in early pregnancy.

Trying to Conceive

If you are trying to conceive, we offer supportive care and early assessment where needed. This includes advice, investigations and early pregnancy monitoring for those who may benefit from additional reassurance or clinical input.

First Trimester (up to 13 weeks)

During early pregnancy, we provide first trimester care including early pregnancy scans to confirm viability, location of pregnancy and gestational age. We also offer advanced screening such as NIPT test UK from 10 weeks to assess the chance of chromosomal conditions, alongside infection screening and early pregnancy assessment.

Second Trimester

In the second trimester, detailed ultrasound assessment becomes increasingly important. We provide anomaly scans, growth monitoring and ongoing assessment of fetal development, as well as continued screening and follow-up where required.

Third Trimester

Later in pregnancy, we offer growth scans, wellbeing assessment and monitoring of placental function to support safe and informed planning for delivery. Consultant-led review is available for any concerns arising during pregnancy.

Miscarriage and Early Pregnancy Concerns

We provide specialist miscarriage care and early pregnancy assessment, including ultrasound evaluation, investigation and follow-up support for those experiencing bleeding, pain or previous pregnancy loss.

Preparing for Birth and Beyond

As pregnancy progresses, we support preparation for delivery and newborn care. Our services extend into postnatal support, ensuring continuity of care from early pregnancy through to birth and beyond.

Newborn Care and Screening

Our care extends beyond pregnancy into the newborn period. We offer specialist assessment including developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) ultrasound screening and advanced newborn screening options. These include extended newborn genetic screening panels designed to identify a wide range of inherited conditions early, supporting prompt diagnosis and early intervention where required.

Early Pregnancy Scans

Our early pregnancy scans in Cardiff provide reassurance in early pregnancy, confirming viability, fetal heartbeat, location of pregnancy and gestational age. These scans are particularly helpful for those experiencing symptoms such as bleeding or pain, or for reassurance following previous pregnancy loss.

Pregnancy Scans

We provide a full range of pregnancy scans in Cardiff including dating scans, anomaly scans, growth scans and wellbeing assessments. Ultrasound plays a key role in monitoring fetal development and identifying potential concerns throughout pregnancy.

NIPT Test UK

We offer advanced NIPT test UK options from 10 weeks of pregnancy. NIPT is a highly accurate screening test for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome, with detection rates greater than 99% for Down syndrome. A range of NIPT options are available, from targeted screening to more comprehensive panels including sex chromosome conditions, microdeletions and selected single gene disorders.

Carrier Screening

Our carrier screening services assess the risk of passing on inherited genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and haemoglobinopathies. Testing can be undertaken before pregnancy or in early pregnancy to provide additional information and reassurance.

Miscarriage Care

We provide specialist miscarriage care including early pregnancy assessment, ultrasound evaluation, investigation and follow-up support. Our consultant-led approach ensures timely diagnosis and personalised care for those experiencing pregnancy loss or complications.
