Cardiac Scan – Fetal Echo

A maternal transabdominal ultrasound scan of the baby’s heart or fetal echo (ideally from 20 weeks) with a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist. The scan will examine the baby’s heart function, heart rhythm and heart structure and will be followed by a consultation with the Paediatric Cardiologist to discuss the findings and cardiac implications.

Congenital heart diseaseCongenital heart disease such as cardiac anomalies or heart defects affect about 1% of newborn babies and are the commonest type of structural fetal abnormalities but only about 50% of heart defects are routinely detected at the routine Anomaly Scan. When heart defects are present there may be an increased risk of genetic and other developmental abnormalities in the baby. As an example, babies with an AVSD, a hole between the two sides of the heart, have a 50% chance of having Down Syndrome.

Early detection of these heart defects  enables early referral to tertiary care centres with adequate expertise so that appropriate investigations can be offered, and plans made for the most appropriate mode, timing and place of delivery especially if the baby will need early cardiac surgery.
