Cardiac Scan – Fetal Echo
A transabdominal fetal cardiac scan ultrasound scan or fetal echo (ideally from 20 weeks) with a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist. The scan will examine the baby’s heart function, rhythm and structure and will be followed by a consultation to discuss the findings and cardiac implications.
Cardiac anomalies affect about 1% of newborn babies and only about 50% are routinely detected at the routine Anomaly Scan. Early detection of these anomalies enables early referral to tertiary care centres with adequate expertise so that appropriate investigations can be offered, and plans made for the most appropriate mode, timing and place of delivery.
