    CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling)

    Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) involves a fine needle being guided by Dr Bryan Beattie (Consultant in Fetal Medicine) using ultrasound through the abdominal wall into the placenta to allow a small sample to be taken for genetic tests or other studies. It is usually done between 11-13 weeks whereas amniocentesis is after 15 weeks. The miscarriage rate is 0.5%.
