About Hereditary Genetic Testing
All of us have a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of cancer. Most are due to environmental or lifestyle factors and, here in the UK, we have a range of excellent national screening programmes to identify some cancers as early as possible when treatment can often be most effective. Many cardiac and other health conditions are also linked to specific genetic changes or mutations which can also be screened for.
About the Invitae Genetic Health Screen
The Invitae Cancer Screen analyses more than 60 genes related to inherited cancers that, if detected early, may have effective medical interventions and preventive measures. Conditions tested include breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, colorectal cancer, cutaneous melanoma, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, renal cell cancer, and thyroid cancer.
The Invitae Cardio Screen analyses more than 75 genes related to inherited cardiovascular conditions that, if detected early, may have effective medical interventions and preventive measures. Conditions tested include aortopathies, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, thrombophilia, and genetic forms of high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
All genes included in the Cancer and Cardio Screen can also be found in the Invitae Genetic Health Screen, which includes cardiovascular and cancer genes, as well as additional medically actionable conditions.
The Invitae Genetic Health Screen analyses more than 145 genes related to inherited cancers, cardiovascular conditions, and additional conditions that, if detected early, may have effective medical interventions and preventive measures. The Invitae Genetic Health Screen is our most comprehensive proactive health test, including all the genes analysed in the Invitae Cancer Screen and Invitae Cardio Screen, as well as several more associated with medically actionable conditions.
Having the Test
Having a test is a straight-forward process:
- the test is based on a saliva sample (a ‘spit-test’) so there’s no need for any blood tests
- if your clinic offers our tests, then you can request it from them (you’ll book with them, pay them, they will undertake the test with you and talk to you about your results)
- you can request a test directly from us (you book with us, pay us, we’ll send the test kit to you at home, we’ll provide a pre-test consultation and talk to you about your results and you’ll have the offer of a free post-test counselling session with a Consultant in Genetics if your result is positive)
