Kidney, Ureter and Bladder Scan (KUB) – Female
Kidney, Ureter and Bladder Scan (KUB) is a sonographer abdominal ultrasound scan available to people over 18 years of age whose biological sex assigned at birth is female to check the renal tract and will examine the following:
- shape and size of both kidneys
- appearance of the ureters (which drain urine from kidney to bladder)
- shape and outline of your bladder when full
- check if your bladder empties fully
Patients who would benefit from this scan:
- recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI)
- history of kidney stones
- history of bladder stones
- persistent bladder problems

How to prepare
You will need a full bladder for your scan.
- Please drink at least 500ml of water 30 minutes before your appointment time.
- Try not to empty your bladder, or just empty it a little if you are uncomfortable.
You can continue to take any medicines prescribed by your doctor.
You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your scan.
Risks
A kidney, ureter and bladder ultrasound scan is a safe procedure with no radiation or X-ray exposure and has no side effects.
