ZIWIG Endotest Endometriosis Saliva Test
About 10% of women are affected by endometriosis, with average times for diagnosis of around 8 years. Patients not infrequently see up to 10 doctors before being diagnosed following a range of investigations (MRI, pelvic ultrasound, laparoscopy).
ZIWIG Endotest® is a new non-invasive diagnostic saliva test for reliable and rapid diagnosis for all types of endometriosis. This DIY home saliva test relies on Next Generation Sequencing of micro RNA present in saliva and on the use of Artificial Intelligence to analyse the results. Results are available in 4 weeks.
EXCLUSIONS – The test is only available for women 18-43 years old who are not pregnant or HIV positive.
About Endometriosis
Endometriosis is characterised by the presence of endometrium (the mucous membranes lining the inside of the uterus) outside the uterine cavity, in various organs: ovaries, vagina, rectum, bladder, intestines, lungs. At the time of menstruation, these endometrial fragments found in abnormal locations cannot be removed. This causes a range of symptoms including pain, digestive problems, fatigue, urinary disorders and infertility. It can sometimes be completely asymptomatic and is often only discovered during a consultation motivated by difficulties in becoming pregnant (a significant proportion of patients with endometriosis have problems with fertility).
It is usual for the symptoms of endometriosis and the pain associated with it to get worse over time and it can be the cause of a significant deterioration in quality of life. The pain can lead to sleep disorders, which in turn can cause chronic fatigue and mood changes such as irritability or depression. Family and social relationships can be affected.
Traditional Diagnosis and Treatment
MRI scans and pelvic ultrasound scans are often used to diagnose endometriosis with confirmation by a laparoscopy.
Currently, there is no treatment to cure endometriosis. Beyond pain relief, hormonal treatments are used (based on the use of oestrogen-progestin contraceptives or continuous progestins) to block menstruation and stop periods. This background treatment usually prevents recurrence and the development of new lesions but some of the medications used can also trigger the menopause is some people, adding symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes and weight gain. These symptoms can be managed with additional medication.
Surgical treatment is considered when medical treatments are insufficient to relieve the pain. Its goal is to remove endometriosis lesions and correct anatomical abnormalities caused by the disease, including adhesions that reduce organ mobility. The procedure is most often performed by laparoscopy.
