Professor Gareth Evans

Professor Gareth Evans MB BS, FRCP, MD (GMC 2818946) is a Consultant Geneticist with a national and international reputation for his work in cancer genetics, particularly neurofibromatosis and breast cancer including hereditary breast cancer.

Professor Gareth Evans developed a highly regarded clinical service for cancer genetics in the North West of England and is an important opinion leader on hereditary breast cancer and cancer syndromes.

Professor Evans has published approximately 980 peer-reviewed research publications, with over 220 on neurofibromatosis. He led a successful bid for a nationally funded NF2 service, securing £7.5 million per year. He has developed a national training program for clinicians, nurses, and genetic counselors in breast cancer genetics. His clinical interests include hereditary cancer screening, genetics, breast cancer, and neurofibromatosis.

He served as chair of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence‘s Familial Breast Cancer Guideline Development Group from 2002 to 2010, becoming its clinical lead in 2011. He also served as Chief Investigator for two National Institute for Health Research–funded projects on breast cancer prediction from 2009. He is a two term NIHR Senior investigator (now emeritus).

He was co-editor of Risk Assessment and Management in Cancer Genetics. In 2020, he was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
